Infos zum Event:
We’re delighted to welcome Tommy from Oslo. He will present his book and play records.
„Tommy Søvik is a DJ, record collector, and music historian from Oslo. He has collected soul and funk records since the early 1980s and was co-founder of the long-running club concept Oslo Soul Experience. His DJ sets span deep soul and funk from the 1960s through the 1980s.
About his book: Soul Voices – Soul with a Message 1960–1980 documents how African American artists used soul music as a tool for protest, identity, and community during the Civil Rights and Black Power eras.
Based on extensive archival research and a large private record collection, the book presents more than 300 message-driven 7-inch singles — many of them obscure, self-financed, and locally released — revealing a largely overlooked history of musical resistance.
Through lyric-based analysis and historical context, Soul Voices shows how soul music functioned as a social and political voice during one of the most transformative periods of the twentieth century.“
